Dress for Success Seattle

How I give back as a personal stylist

Fashion and style can be transformative. I believe that when we feel good in what we’re wearing, we interact with others in a more productive way and build more positive relationships. I truly believe clothing is that important.

Dress for Success Seattle (DFSS) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and development tools. Its vision is a world where women do not live in poverty, are treated with dignity and respect and able to reach their full potential. For many women experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, incarceration, and more, clothing can be a huge barrier to employment. DFSS works to tear down that barrier so that women can put their best foot forward.

Ever since I joined DFSS as a Volunteer Stylist back in September 2017, I have realized time and time again that helping women dress and feel their best opens the door to their lifetime opportunities, both personally and professionally. Creating a distinct style to increase confidence is the most satisfying feeling, especially if it can help a woman gain a better income or have her own home. Suitings, which consist of exploring personal style and creating outfits for job interviews and the first period of employment, are often fun and also emotional. There are tears of joy and bursts of laughter. There’s giggling while posing for a “before and after”. There’s pain and there’s levity and a constant thread of resilience through it all. The women we serve are phenomenal.

DFSS is growing in many ways including clients served and programs offered. Over 1,000 appointments took place in 2018 and services expanded from just Suitings, to haircuts, Career Center appointments, Employment Retention programs, Technical training courses, Financial Literacy, and more. The possibilities feel endless for this important and impactful organization.
